MDF (medium density fiberboard) is an affordable, durable and often environmentally friendly option for furniture. It is a great way to create a piece that looks like real wood without having to spend a fortune.
The downside of MDF is that it can look cheap and drab, especially when painted. To make your MDF furniture stand out, try focusing on a unique detail. For example, you can add wallpaper samples or decals to the area behind the shelves on a bookcase, or paint an accent panel or window along the top of an armoire or dresser.
You can also use iron-on edge banding or strips of decorative molding to edging MDF pieces. These bands are a great way to finish the edges of MDF and help them match the wood on the rest of the pieces.
Seal the MDF with Drywall Compound and Primer
Whether you have routed edges or just a factory edge, you will need to seal your MDF to prevent it from swelling in water or humidity. This will make it easier to work with and to paint.
Painting the MDF
For small, low-impact projects you can simply paint the edges and surfaces of an MDF item with a high-quality acrylic paint. The paint will soak in to the MDF and blend into its texture.
If you need to paint MDF pieces that will see daily use, you may want to consider applying a preferred sealer, such as polyurethane, to protect the paint from wear and tear.
